The new PS5 console receives a noticeable upgrade

The latest PlayStation 5 model released by Sony appears to have come with a rather noticeable upgrade. Over the past month, the latest hardware revision of the PS5, officially known as the CFI-1200 model, has begun hitting store shelves in regions like Australia. And while this version of the console was known to be a bit lighter than the model launched in 2020, questions have been raised about whether or not any other changes are pending. Now, we finally have these answers.

Detailed by tech YouTuber Austin EvansIt looks like Sony has completely overhauled the PS5’s interior with its CFI-1200 model. After a complete disassembly of the console, Evans reports that the redesign not only makes the PS5 less bulky, but also makes it more energy-efficient than previous versions of the platform. Specifically, Evans claims that the PS5 should now draw roughly 20-30 watts less watts than the two other models of console Sony has released in the past.

On top of that, the PS5’s motherboard has now also been scaled down a bit. Compared to previous versions, the CFI-1200 model for the PS5 has a motherboard that is two inches smaller. In conjunction with this change, the heatsink that cools the system has also been made smaller to accommodate the smaller motherboard.

In short, it’s good to see that Sony seems to be improving the PS5 as the years go by. While this may be expected in some ways, we’ve also seen other console manufacturers cut corners in the past with cheaper parts when it comes to hardware reviews. Basically, the PS5’s CFI-1200 appears to be the best version we’ve seen to date. If you haven’t bought the console for yourself yet, you can rest easy knowing you’re buying the top version of the platform.

What do you think of these new tweaks that Sony made to the PS5? And do you think we’ll see more PS5 mods like this over time? Make sure to let me know either in the comments or connect with me on Twitter at Trustworthy.
